Period 4 English 10

Theme Comparison Essay
People regret sacrificing valuables in order to impress people. This happens often in a person’s lifetime. The actions of your peers may affect the way you act due to peer pressure. “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” and “Catch the Moon” are somewhat similar in themes. Both books have an individual character that changes due to another individual’s expectations or standards.
“The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” the main character is the narrator. The main conflict in the story is the fish that the narrator caught and the reason why he let it go. The resolution was to continue fishing, to quit liking Sheila, and to move on being himself and not changing for anyone else. The main character changes his hobbies, goals, and motivations just because of a girl. For example, in the book the two characters were on a date and they were sailing to a carnival. The narrator threw a line out to catch a fish while they were sailing, and out of embarrassment and trying to fit in with her he cut the line to one of the biggest fish he’d ever caught. Similar to the second book the theme are people regret sacrificing valuables in order to impress people. Especially if it’s to do something negative in your life.
In “Catch the Moon” the main character is Luis Cintron. The main conflict of the story was that Luis had to find a hubcap for this girl that he thought hated him, and he wanted to change that and make her like him. This is only so because he liked her. The conflict was resolved by Luis finding the hubcap, polishing it as much as possible, then at midnight delivering it to Naomi’s window. For example, in the story he stated that “ ..he waited to give to her the first good thing that he had given anyone in a long time.” This shows that he is obviously doing something different than usual. But by doing so means that he is changing and the only reason why he is changing is because of Naomi, all because he wants her to like him. So, like the first book the theme is people regret sacrificing valuables in order to impress people. Except this time it was to change him from a hooligan to a gentleman.
“The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” and “Catch the Moon” have very similar themes. This is so because in each book a character changes in response to another character. Each main character in every book, like an individual in real life, gets influenced and changes to impress their peers or just to fit in. This act is wrong. People should be themselves and no one should change that. The main character of each story did, regardless if it was for a good or bad cause.

Homeroom Reform Essay

Homeroom Reform
I have a dream, that society and classrooms will one day form together to make a Super Class classified by technology of overwhelming content and outrageous experiences. For example, class today with technology can change a student’s perspective and learning tactics to achieve a better grade. Now imagine all classes throughout the day with technology in the society we live in today that is overwhelmed with computers and Internet, and then compare the difference of achievement from each class. The statistics would be astounding! The campus of San Pasqual Academy, a foster youth based school, can and will improve with use of the grant and the provided technology that comes along with it.
There are 510,000 foster kids in the U.S. and only 15,300 of these kids graduate high school. That is only 30% that passed, so where are the other 70%? And why didn’t they pass? Although we are not sure we guess and estimate using hypothesis and tactics to test if they help. But what we do know and we are sure of is only 15% of these foster kids go to college, and that’s only 2,295 kids! Those kids that go to college are only about 6.6% of the kids that have graduate from high school. The statistics are ridiculous and these numbers are unbelievable. Statistics also state that students do better at work with some sort of aid or assistance. So, my theory is to assist us with technology, technology that can be easily provided with a prize-winning grant.
The only technology used at San Pasqual Academy is in English class, and in this class we’ve never used a sheet of paper for an assignment. Our teacher is really focused on our education for out futures and specifically assigns technical assignments using different websites to educate our abilities on how to use and manage our technical skills. For example, we have vocabulary words we write in our presentation and to record them we have our own class Wikipedia. Anyone can access this Wikipedia and change it if it contains an error or if it just needs to be completed. This comes to show technology does help students be more successful and organized.
Apparently there is a problem within society in the terms of students graduating from high school which is probably the most important achievement to earn in life. It is also apparent that reasons for this is lack of money from the government to meet the standards for tools in the classroom. From my observations a class with more technology helps a student learning to cope with a life that is heading down a technological path because society is becoming more revolved around computers and with the help of money, we can be equipped with the computers that would for one help us for the future and for two give us a better way of learning our lessons.
Hopefully we will be able to earn this grant and help a dream become reality.I wrote this essay with Joseph Bakhit. We wrote it for the KNSD Homeroom Reform Essay Contest.

Cafeteria Line from Different Points of View
Just the other day I was standing in the lunch line with my friends. I was extremely hungry but Sally up ahead kept horse playing with other kids in the line which held the line up. It kept me waiting ten minutes just to get my food and when I got it, I demolished it.
Third Person-Omniscient
One day last week there was a problem in the lunch line. Sally kept horseplaying with others which caused Bill and Russel to get angry because they were starving from a long day. The cook was getting annoyed so then she kicked Sally to the back of the line and the problem was solved.
Third Person- Limited
Sally was in the lunch line on Wednesday and was hungrier than she had ever been. Another student kept horseplaying which held up the line and Sally kept thinking to herself how badly she wanted her food. The girl was kicked to the back of the line which made Sally extremely happy and she finally got to eat.

Plot Change
If I was in Tom Benecke's shoes I would have never climbed out the window. I would of went to Home Depot to buy a stick that could reach the paper instead. I would not risk my life for a piece of paper. The plot would change a lot if he were to never step out the window because he would not have had time to think about his priorities and made the decision to spend time with his wife. He would of proceeded with his life the same way that he was. The plot would change dramatically if he never left his window.

A Birthday to Remember
January 29th, 2008, a day I will never forget. It was my 13th birthday and my grandparents threw me a huge party because I was turning to a teenager. I had a seventy-five dollar ice cream cake from Baskin Robins. They paid three-hundred dollars to rent a jumper for my brother, my two friends, and I. They gave me hundreds of dollars to go shopping for clothes, and at that time I had my life made easy. That day was the perfect day, but right before bed we decided to go on the jumper for some late night fun. We were wrestling in the dark and having the most fun of my life. Then they decided to gang up on me because I was the “birthday boy” While they tackled me to the ground, my friend Gordo landed with all his weight on my foot and ended up breaking my pinky toe. I couldn’t walk in shoes for three weeks after that! It was a great day even though I got hurt. I don’t regret it because it was all in fun. That was my birthday to never forget!

My Embarrassing Moment
Most Embarrassing Moment
I have had many embarrassing moments in my life but the one that stands out the most in my memory is an incident I had during a spelling bee. It was the district spelling bee that I had reached in my fourth grade. I had just one first place in my school so I was sent to districts. I made it into the late rounds and I was very nervous. As I was walking up to the middle of the stage I tripped and fell over the microphone in front of hundreds of people. I got up as quick as I could but I knew there was no avoiding the laughs of all the audience in attendance. I was so embarrassed and kept thinking about my trip, I wound up thinking about it too much and misspelling my next word. I was eliminated from the district spelling bee and went to the audience where my mom was watching. We then left and went home but I could not stop thinking about my fall. The next day at school all my friends starting joking around with me and gave me the nickname “kid who tripped at the bee”. I was called that name for the rest of the year and still to this day have not forgotten that embarrassing incident. But now thinking back at it I tend to find myself laughing.

"Brain Break"
Today during my beloved brain break, I looked up the record of the Anaheim Angels Major League Baseball team and found out some heartbreaking news. They are behind three and a half games due to the lucky hot streak that the Texas Rangers have got into. But none the less the Angels have won seven of their last ten games. They have been very consistent as of late considering that their best power hit had a devastating injury due to a walk off home run celebration that he broke his foot doing.

San Pasqual Academy
17701 San Pasqual Valley Road
Escondido CA, 92025
Dear, Mr. Ron Major:
I am writing to inform you about how the majority of us students on this campus feel about the rules of 7th period. In order for us to go, we should have two or three missing assignments not just one. Since you are the principal I am coming to you with this situation because you helped make up this rule.
I would like to see this change occur because not everyone is perfect and even the best students from time to time miss an assignment. It happens to many people. It is much more different if someone had a handful of assignments missing, but one is really not a big deal.
Thank you in advance for considering this topic and putting a lot of thought into where I’m coming from. I look forward to a more relaxing school environment and not having so much stress over just one assignment, Thank You, This will make a huge difference.
Sincerely,
Marcus B

The day JFK died was a very eventful day for Elena. Elena was on a playground at Public School Number 13. She was skinny and had a low self esteem due to her "flat chested body". Eugene is a boy that Elena had a huge crush on. Him and his family lived in the only house on the block with a fence and trees. He is tall and has blond hair and also wears glasses. He read books for hours at the kitchen table. Eugene and Elena know each other because they go to the same school. They lived in the city of Paterson, New Jersey on the corner of straight and market. She lived in El Building and he lived in a house on the same block. On this same day of November 22ND, 1963 John F. Kennedy had been assassinated in Houston Texas. It was a US tragedy. This day is important to Elena because she met Eugene on this day and it was important to Americans because the president that they had thought was finally going to bring good to America had been Assassinated. A sad day for most Americans but some people managed to still make it a good day.

"Rhyme Zone" Poem
I have been playing baseball for many years
When I step up to the plate pitchers have many fears.
I hit homeruns like no tomorrow
The opponents ask “do you have another ball I can borrow”.
I steal bases like the U.S in
Ask any fan and they will say that’s a fact.
Reading my poem I bet you are impressed
Meet me at the field and I will put that to the test.
